Colombian coffee is some of the most nuanced in the world — bright acidity, caramel sweetness, and a clean finish that holds up across brewing methods. But the method you choose changes what ends up in your cup. Here's how to get the most out of it at home.
Start with the right beans
Freshness matters more than technique. Colombian beans at peak flavor are typically within 2–4 weeks of roast date. Our 1lb Tinto de Oro Premium Colombian Roast and 1/2lb option ship shortly after roasting so you're not working with stale coffee.
Pour-Over (Recommended)
Pour-over is the best method for showcasing Colombian coffee's clarity and brightness.
- Grind: Medium-fine (like coarse sand)
- Water temp: 200°F (just off boil)
- Ratio: 1:15 coffee to water (e.g., 20g coffee to 300ml water)
- Bloom: Pour twice the weight of water over the grounds, wait 30 seconds, then pour in slow circles
The result: a clean, bright cup with distinct fruit and caramel notes.
French Press
French press adds body and richness — great if you prefer a fuller, heavier cup.
- Grind: Coarse
- Water temp: 200°F
- Ratio: 1:12 (e.g., 25g coffee to 300ml water)
- Steep: 4 minutes, then press slowly
Expect more texture and a slightly bolder flavor profile compared to pour-over.
Drip Machine
The most convenient option — and still excellent with quality beans.
- Use filtered water if your tap water is heavily chlorinated
- Grind fresh if possible (medium grind)
- Standard ratio: 1–2 tablespoons per 6 oz of water
Most drip machines run slightly under 200°F, so err toward a slightly finer grind to compensate.
One thing that matters more than method
Grind fresh. Pre-ground coffee loses most of its aromatics within 15–30 minutes of grinding. If you're investing in quality Colombian beans, a burr grinder is the single best upgrade you can make.
The right vessel helps too
A good mug keeps your coffee at the right temperature without rushing you. Our Signature Ceramic Coffee Mug is designed for that — and if you're brewing on the go, the Insulated Stainless Steel Travel Tumbler keeps your pour-over hot for hours.
